Father and Son
The penultimate race weekend of the Monoposto Racing Club Championship visited Anglesey International for rounds 11 and 12 of the 2011 Monoposto Championship.
OMS 2000M drivers Chris and Gary Hill were competing in the event, Gary racing on Saturday and Chris on Sunday. The international circuit has panoramic views of the sea and a track with a mix of very fast long flowing corners together with slow tight corners.
Saturdays qualifying session was very wet and Gary only managing to secure 8th on the race grid, one place behind Mono 1400 Championship Leader Geoff Fern. For the race conditions improved to a damp drying track, suitable for slicks. At the start Gary dropped one place to 9th, during the race he steadily moved through the pack to finish an excellent 3rd overall as well as winning the 1400 class. His fastest lap time secured the 1400 International circuit lap record with 1:28.931, an average speed of 85 mph.
Chris took over for Sundays race and had the opposite weather mix to Gary. Chris's qualifying session was dry and he had a great session finishing 4th overall to take a second row grid position with a best lap time of 1:28.606 and an average speed of 85.32mph, inside his Dad's lap record time. For the race the weather was wet and as Chris is a novice, he has never raced in wet conditions before. With no experience of driving a single seater on wet weather tyres this was going to be a baptism of fire. Chris lost a place off the start into the first corner but got it back into the second corner only to get a wheel onto the wet curb which resulted in a spin that put him back to 23rd and last position. From this point on he had a good race quickly learning how to handle the OMS and the challenging conditions, to get back into 9th position at the finish.
