Running in The Family
BARC Yorkshire Centre hosted the Yorkshire Speed Hillclimb on Saturday 4th August and the Montague Burton Hillclimb on Sunday 5th August, both rounds of the 2012 Harewood Hillclimb Championship & Harewood FTD Championship.
Harewood is the local hill of OMS Racings' Steve & Lynn Owen, Steve is a multiple FTD Championship winner & Lynn the Harewood Ladies Champion on several occasions.
Judging by the times Steve was setting in practice on Saturday everything was going his way, until the engine let go over the finish line on his first timed run. This one climb was luckily sufficient to bag him Fastest Time of the Day. Fortunately Lynn ran before Steve setting a very competitive personal best time of 55.31 seconds, enough to secure her 2nd FTD: the first husband and wife top two FTD finishers at Harewood Hill.
Fellow OMS drivers John Chacksfield (OMS 2000V 2ltr) and Graham Smith (OMS 2000m 1100) finished 3rd and 4th FTD.
Overnight Steve installed a replacement engine into the family OMS 25, arriving at Harewood just as the meeting was kicking off. Following one installation climb a piece in practice Lynn & Steve headed the class on first & second timed runs with Steve sitting in FTD. As the field prepared to take third runs a thunder storm broke directly overhead with torrential rain and lightening. Final runs were cancelled as everyone sheltered in trailers until the storm passed.
Despite the weather it was another successful day for the OMS family, with Steve taking FTD from John Chacksfield and Graham Smith, with Lynn missing out on an FTD award by 3/100ths of a second, finishing in fourth.
Jersey's Cathy & Steve Elliott in their 1600cc OMS 2000M had their best weekend ever at Harewood, both set personal best times, with Cathy dipping into the 57's.
