Fantastic Day
BARC Yorkshire Centre hosted the final meetings of the Harewood Hill Climb Speed Championship on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 September. A strong OMS contingent turned out for both days, for what was a fabulous weekend of motor sport blessed with sunshine and warm temperatures throughout.
A beautiful example of an early OMS sports car was there for both days. Andrew Short had travelled from Exeter to compete in his ex-Steve/Lynn Owen OMS SC1 that now runs with an 1100cc turbo power unit. This is a sister car to the one seen this season on the Midland hills in the hands of Charles Williams and Tim Cross.
Harewood regulars Cathy and Steve Elliott made the journey from Jersey for their only event at the hill this year due to other commitments. Both picked up where they left off last season, trading times and running in the 58's in their 1300cc Hayabusa powered OMS 2000M. Steve dropped into the 57's on his final climb of the day on Sunday. It was good to see Chris Houston from Northern Ireland who was also running in the 1600cc racing car class, sharing his ex-Tim Wilson OMS CF04 with his brother Nick Houston.
Paul Martin has had a great first season at Harewood in the 1300cc Hayabusa powered OMS 2000M. He has made the transition from Mitsubishi EVO to single seaters with ease and set new PB's at most meetings, this weekend running in the 56's. Had he joined the Harewood Speed Championship his times would have secured a top five place in the FTD Championship.
Another Harewood regular and OMS driver John Chacksfield ran in the 53's with his 2 litre OMS CF04, taking 2nd Fastest Time of Day on Saturday and 3rd FTD on Sunday, as well as winning his class on both days.
Steve and Lynn Owen visited their local hill for the final round on Sunday, driving the 1600cc OMS 28. Having problems with a broken second gear they elected to only take 2 timed runs, missing the third timed run to preserve the gearbox. Steve set Fastest Time of Day with his first run time of 52.33 and set a new PB, his second run time of 52.48 consolidated his FTD position and a class win. Lynn's first timed run put her second in class with 56.10 seconds, but with a hard charging Peter D Smith determined to snatch the place from her, Lynn's second run of 55.46 ensured she retained 2nd in class making it a family one two: Peter finished 3rd in class.
As Steve said at the prize presentation "fantastic weather, fantastic organisation, fantastic marshalling, it was all fantastic."
At the time of writing there are no results available on the Harewood website. Please click here to see the class times when they are posted.
