Five Get Over Excited

Quite possibly, whilst driving at one of the fastest British Hillclimb venues, Gurston Down in Wiltshire. The BARC South West Centre hosted rounds 7 and 8 of the Avon Tyres/TTC Group MSA British Hillclimb Championship along with the MSA Hillclimb Leaders Championship on the weekend of 24th and 25th May 2014.

A select group of five OMS drivers consisting of Gary Hill and Harry Pick who are share driving the 600cc OMS Hornet this season. OMS 28 1100cc owners Simon Andrews and Bernard Kevill and to complete the quintet Trevor Willis in his V8 powered OMS 28.

Although in racing cars up to 600cc there were only the two OMS drivers - seasoned campaigner Gary and his young challenger Harry; it didn't deter them from having a good battle for class honours. The duel was settled in Gary's favour, his best time of 33.43 seconds took the win from Harry who finished on 34.43

Simon and Bernie are now starting to lean on their OMS 28 and with good effect looking at this weekend’s results. Simon took second place in the class on 31.17 with Bernie finishing third on aggregate with his best run time of 31.55 seconds.

In the unlimited racing car class Trevor had to settle for third place with his best class run 26.36 seconds. His priority was qualification for the two run offs and scoring British Hillclimb Championship points to add to his recent Barbon Manor/Harewood Hill Climb maximum score weekend. A challenge in itself for the 3.2Ltr V8 powered OMS on this power hill, but with some cars reaching speeds of 150mph + at the line, the challenge becomes even tougher.

Wallace Menzies won the first run off and his first of the season, with 2013 British Champion Scott Moran second and Trevor third; these three positions were covered by 11/100ths of a second. In run off two Scott had the edge and also took his first run off win of 2014, this time Wallace took second and Trevor was again third. A good result for Trevor in view of the power differential plus a further 16 points to add to his total; steady Trevor, don’t get over excited!
