Oastler takes First Blood

Bathurst Light Car club hosted Rounds 1 and 2 of the Mantic Clutch NSW Championship on 4th and 5th March. (Report excerpts and photograph reproduced from the CAMS NSW Hillclimb Championship web page).

Fresh from winning the 2016 Australian Championships, Malcolm Oastler started the New Year with a bang and a new outright record for the opening round of the Mantic Clutch 2017 NSW Championship. Saturday’s event, on the Esses course being the first part of the popular annual BLCC double header.

The absence of previous victors like Dean Tighe and Tim Edmondson (and even the chance of showers) did not dampen Malcolm’s enthusiasm for the task at hand. Driving his self-developed turbo Suzuki powered OMS open wheeler; he blasted a new outright course record of 21.24s.

Local driver and past NSW Champion Doug Barry (Lola T8750) pushed hard all day but had to settle for the runner up slot on 22.33s ahead Hillclimb Panel Chairman Ron Hay (Synergy Dallara, 24.01s).

OH, OH, OASTLER AGAIN!

Sunday March 5, Round 2 of the Mantic Clutch NSW Hillclimb Championship (the second day of the annual Bathurst Double Header) once again provided ideal conditions for fast times. Mudgee’s Doug Barry (Lola T87500) set the early pace to lead Malcolm Oastler (OMS) and a rapid Zac LeLievre in the Westfield Megabusa.

The second and third runs saw Malcolm Oastler sharpening the focus, being first into the 38s bracket then topping that off with a best run of 37.75s for FTD. Doug Barry, who never gives up and tried hard to the very end, finished with a best of 38.60s, ahead of Ron Hay (Synergy Dallara).
